So what can I say about my triathlon? I completed it. Unfortunately there were a few hiccups and I wasn't one hundred percent sure what to do. Hopefully someday I'll do another and be able to improve. It was colder than usual in Las Vegas and very windy. The event was well organized. I had no problem in the swim with the cold water, not being able to see the bottom, or swimming the half mile distance. I did have trouble with being clobbered at every side and kicked from the front and the back. It was so crowded that made it difficult to swim. The transition area was something I did not think about and I wish I had. It was cold so although I thought I was going fast, I probably wasn't. I decided to use the the porta potty even though I wasn't dying to go, another bad move. I had never pulled off a wet suit before. I put on a tank top and compression socks both of which were tight. Oh, well.
I rented a bike down there and rode it a few minutes before checking it into the transition area. During the ride I felt good till about half way and then I started having trouble getting the bike to switch gears. I was on a fairly level stretch and was turning my pedals over too rapidly and couldn't get to a harder gear. I did great going up hill; I just wish going level or down hill I would have been able to pedal better. Then I was happy to be running, something I was in control of, unlike the gobs of swimmers or my bike. I was passing people during the entire run and shouting at all the other runs saying, good job, you're almost done! That all being said, I do enjoy swimming and the bike is the most relaxing portion because it's not a full body workout. So I can chalk this all up to experience and do better next time!
